Coast. Brighton is on the bay. Salt-laden air accelerates the breakdown of pool interiors and attacks reinforcement wherever the concrete cover is thin. Coastal pools generally need resurfacing sooner than identical pools inland.
Local renovation pattern. Brighton commonly has established, medium-to-large concrete pools attached to older detached homes. Many are rectangular and finished with older marblesheen, pebblecrete or traditional waterline tiles. Renovation work often extends beyond the interior surface to loose coping, hollow render, dated tiles and earlier patch repairs. Access can also be restricted by narrow side paths, mature landscaping and finished paving, which increases the labour involved in removing waste and bringing materials to the pool.
Beaumaris pools are often older pools
Beaumaris is known for its mid-century architecture, and the pools tend to match the houses — a lot of them went in decades ago and haven’t been fully renovated since. Older shells are frequently sound; the interiors and the surrounds are what wear out. But the age of the pool changes the first stage of the job in one important way.
If a pool was built or last resurfaced before the mid-1990s, the interior may contain asbestos. Marblesheen — the crushed-marble finish common on pools of that era — was often manufactured with added asbestos fibre for crack resistance. It’s not visually identifiable, and mechanically removing it can release fibres.
Our position on any older Beaumaris pool: we don’t chip, grind or water-blast an unknown pre-1990s interior until a sample has been tested by a NATA-accredited laboratory. If asbestos is confirmed, we do not commence surface work until a licensed removalist has completed removal and issued a clearance certificate. Because Beaumaris pools skew older, most jobs are a full interior renovation — resurface, waterline tiles and coping together — rather than a single element. A pool that’s waited this long usually needs the whole interior brought back at once.
